Membership Contributions
  1. Why are you asking for so much? so little?

Yes we do realise that CHF50 is a lot of money for some people - perhaps especially those living and working in developing nations. There are many however who feel that the sum is too modest. We feel that the sum of CHF50 is a reasonable compromise.

  2. What precisely do you intend to do with the money raised?

What we intend to do with the money depends on how much you come up with. Our first priority is to cover our running costs. We have to pay phone, fax, mailing, and printing. Software - and occasional hardware - purchases. Of these, by far the largest item is the printing and mailing of the Newsletter. It is worth noting that your membership fees are NOT used for salary purposes. Helene, Richard and many others donate freely and generously their time. I should be happy to post the annual financial statement of the Association if you so wish. If however the influx of funds permits it, we will use your donations (on a modest scale) for such items as:

    a) gifts or loans to alumni who are in a situation of need. In recent years two donations of CHF500 have been made to retired long service staff who were in a difficult financial (health related) situation. Another gift was made to help an alumnus who is dedicating his life to work as a doctor in third world countries for minimal financial reward.

    b) provision of scholarships in the school - preferentially, but not exclusively, sons and daughters of alumni/ae

    c) supporting projects in the school such as the purchase of computers and books, science equipment, building projects etc.

However our first priority is to give the Association a sound financial basis. We do not wish to be fat cats sitting on a large bank balance - but we have been perilously close to the zero level on several occasions in recent years.

  3. What is the difference between an active and a donating member?

It is our hope that the income generated from ACTIVE members will at least help us cover our day-to-day running costs. We hope however that the extra income generated from DONATING members enable us to participate in points a) b) and c) above.

  4. Why do you have ten year and life options?

The ten-year and life options have been introduced in response to frequent requests from alumni. They have told us that the process of making the payment annually is tedious. So we have given you what many of you asked for.

  5. Will life members be asked to pay again?

A life member is what it means. Life members will not have to pay a second time. Of course we are always ready to accept further donations, and it is true to say that many existing life members continue to support us annually, for which we are very grateful.

  6. Why don't you cut your costs on the newsletter?

Cutting the costs of the Newsletter. Yes indeed we must do this. One method that is under consideration is to have the Newsletter printed and mailed in the US for USA and Canada alumni (2000+ of you). Post the Newsletter on the web site in the expectation that many of you will forgo receiving the hard copy and content yourself with the web edition. As you almost certainly know we have posted the last 3 editions on Richard's web site - and the current one will be posted soon. However we must recognise that many alumni (largely from the older generation) are not web connected and for them at least the hard copy is required. There are committee members who feel that making the web edition available to everyone will reduce our income because there are those who only pay in order to get the Newsletter. Perhaps they are right? Perhaps we should only allow paid up members to access the web edition of the Newsletter? YOUR VIEWS ON THIS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
